New Zealand's T20I Squad Update: Kristian Clarke Steps Up as Bracewell, Milne Face Injuries (2026)

Amid rising concerns over player fitness, New Zealand has officially welcomed Kristian Clarke into their T20I squad for the first three matches of the forthcoming five-match series against India, set to kick off in Nagpur on Wednesday.

Clarke, a right-arm medium pacer, made quite an impression during his debut ODI series, finishing as the top wicket-taker with seven dismissals, notably claiming the wickets of cricket superstar Virat Kohli on two occasions. This remarkable performance has undoubtedly caught the attention of selectors and fans alike.

Head coach Rob Walter explained that Clarke's addition to the team is primarily aimed at providing essential bowling support as they manage the workload of their fast-bowling lineup.

Compounding the situation for New Zealand, Michael Bracewell has experienced a minor strain in his left calf while fielding during the third ODI in Indore this past Sunday. According to a statement released by New Zealand Cricket (NZC), "Bracewell will receive treatment and will be monitored over the next few days before a decision regarding his participation in the tour is finalized."

Adding to the team's challenges, Adam Milne has also sustained a left hamstring injury while bowling for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league on the same day. The NZC statement further revealed, "He is currently undergoing assessment to determine how to best manage this injury."

Walter expressed, "At the moment, we are experiencing a significant amount of player turnover. Some players are returning from injuries specifically for this series, while others are joining us directly from franchise cricket, alongside those who have just completed the ODI series in India and the Super Smash."

"Given the circumstances, we want to ensure we have a diverse range of pace-bowling options lined up for the first three matches of this series. It’s an excellent opportunity for Kristian to continue his journey with the group during his inaugural tour of India. He undoubtedly displayed his skill in the ODI series, but what stood out was his composure and ability to deliver results under pressure."

The New Zealand T20 squad for the initial three matches consists of: Mitchell Santner (captain), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Kristian Clarke, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Ben Lister, Daryl Mitchell, Adam Milne, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, and Will Young.
