A $1 billion legal battle is brewing between boxing's traditional power brokers and the new players on the scene. The Telegraph reports that Frank Warren, the legendary promoter behind Queensberry Promotions, is preparing to take on Sela and the TKO Group, alleging breach of contract and exclusion from a lucrative partnership.
Warren, a Hall of Famer who has worked with boxing greats like Naseem Hamed and Joe Calzaghe, has been instrumental in bringing Saudi Arabian boxing to the forefront. Many of his top fighters, including Tyson Fury, have become regular fixtures in Riyadh.
However, the powerful alliance between Sela, TKO, and Zuffa Boxing, led by Turki Alalshikh, Dana White, and Nick Khan, has seemingly left Warren and Queensberry in the cold. This group has already secured broadcast deals with Paramount+ and is in talks with Sky Sports, signing top talent like cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia and Conor Benn.
The proposed lawsuit claims that Sela and TKO violated agreements with Warren and formed their company without his involvement. Queensberry argues that they provided boxing services to Sela in 2023, giving them an inside look at their operations. Matchroom Boxing has since offered similar services, notably for the Lopez-Stevenson promotion.
Queensberry's first collaboration with Saudi Arabia was the historic crossover fight between Fury and Francis Ngannou. They claim that a contract with TKO was also signed, granting TKO access to their agreement with Sela. This, they say, was a breach of trust, as the information was privileged.
Queensberry is seeking $1 billion in lost income, and Warren is prepared to take the fight to the High Court if necessary. The Telegraph reports that legal exchanges have been intense, and unless Sela and TKO concede, Warren is ready for a full-blown legal battle.
In response to the news of Dana White's involvement with Alalshikh, the Saudi chairman boldly stated, "I trust this league will crush everything in its path." Sela, through a spokesperson, has denied the claims, calling them "unfounded" and "rejected in their entirety."
This dispute highlights the intense competition and shifting dynamics within the boxing industry. With so much at stake, the outcome could shape the future of the sport.
