Elon Musk's xAI: Destroying Tesla's Climate Legacy with Unpermitted Gas Turbines (2026)

Elon Musk's xAI is undoing Tesla's climate work all in the name of AI slop. With 62 unpermitted methane gas turbines operating across two data centers, xAI is set to emit over 6 million tons of greenhouse gases and 1,300 tons of health-harming air pollutants annually. This is despite Tesla's latest impact report boasting about avoiding 32 million metric tons of CO2. Musk's actions are erasing a significant portion of Tesla's climate legacy to power a mediocre AI model.

Once an advocate for carbon taxes, Musk has now turned to 'copy and paste' pollution strategies. xAI's Colossus supercomputer in South Memphis, without environmental permits or pollution controls, has sparked public backlash. The company plans to repeat this strategy in Southaven, Mississippi, raising concerns about the environmental and health impacts.

The emissions from these turbines are substantial, with the Memphis site alone emitting 1,200 to 2,000 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx) annually. This makes xAI the largest industrial source of smog-forming pollution in the Memphis metropolitan area. The human cost is devastating, with children in Southaven developing respiratory problems and families fleeing due to noise pollution.

In contrast, tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are investing in clean energy for their AI operations. Google, for instance, secured a 1 GW solar deal in Texas and triggered 1.9 GW of clean energy development in Minnesota. Musk's choice of unpermitted methane turbines in poor neighborhoods is not only environmentally destructive but also the laziest and cheapest option.

The NAACP's lawsuit against xAI is pending, and the EPA has closed the 'non-road engine' loophole. xAI's approach, powered by subpar AI slop, contradicts Tesla's mission to accelerate sustainable energy. The human stories and real-world consequences are devastating, making Tesla's mission look like a marketing slogan rather than a genuine commitment.
