Cornish Pirates' Four-Day Turnaround Criticized After 41-26 Loss to Coventry
Cornish Pirates' joint-head coach, Gavin Cattle, has expressed his concerns about the team's four-day preparation period before their Champ Rugby match against Coventry. The Pirates suffered a 41-26 defeat at Butts Park Arena on New Year's Day, following a 41-14 loss to league leaders Ealing at home on December 27th.
This defeat marked the Pirates' fifth consecutive loss, leaving them in eighth place. Cattle shared his thoughts with BBC Radio Cornwall, stating, 'We can look at the score in isolation, but we've played top-of-the-league teams in physically demanding games at home on Saturday and were expected to turn it around by Thursday. With a small squad, that's a challenging task.'
Cattle disagreed with the short turnaround, emphasizing player welfare as a critical issue. He added, 'I don't agree with the four-day turnaround; it's too close. We need to discuss player welfare further.'
Despite the loss, Cattle praised the team's physical response, saying, 'I'm pleased with how we responded physically in the game, but we need more.' The Pirates faced an early challenge, trailing 15-0 within 13 minutes. However, quick tries from Dan Hiscocks and Josh King reduced the deficit to three points.
The game took a turn when Rory Suttor was sin-binned after half an hour, allowing Coventry to capitalize with tries from Aristot Benz-Salomon and Senitiki Nayalo, making the score 27-12. The Pirates' struggles continued as they began the second half with 14 players due to a yellow card received by Buster Rice at halftime.
Matty Ward's try in the 51st minute helped the Pirates narrow the gap, but Allan Ferrie's try for Coventry soon after put them back in control. Rice's try in the 65th minute brought the Pirates within eight points. In the final minutes, the Pirates pushed for a fifth try but lost possession, allowing Ewan Baker to score and secure the victory for Coventry.
Cattle reflected on the game, saying, 'I want to commend the boys for their fight. I thought we showed improvement over the last two weeks, and the late try might have masked the score.' He acknowledged Coventry's strong start and performance, emphasizing the importance of results in the league.
Despite the loss, Cattle saw signs of progress, stating, 'We had opportunities to score more, and if we had gotten that try, the finish would have been more exciting. But we have to give Coventry credit for their strong start.' He expressed confidence in the team's ability to improve and perform better in future matches.
